East Side Swept by Leominster in Season-Opening Twinbill
Worcester, MA --- Nick Bergeron scored the go-ahead run in game one and belted a solo home run to cap a Leominster three-run third
inning in game two as Post 151 defeated host East Side Post 201, 4-1 and 5-3, in an American Legion Zone 4 doubleheader to open the
2013 campaign for both squads on Sunday night at Tivnan Field at Lake Park.
The Raiders were led by Jimmy Smith who went 4-for-7 at the dish with a double, an RBI and three stolen bases. Brandon O'Connor was
the only other Post 201 player with a pair of hits (2-for-6) and an RBI. Zach Zona made his Raider debut while Joe Consolmagno, Josh
Riley, Peter Bovenzi and Tim Brutto also saw time on the hill for East Side.
Bergeron was joined by Joey LaPointe who batted 2-for-3 with a double, three stolen bases and a pair of runs scored. Matt Russell and
Kyle Cutler each turned in a complete game effort on the mound as they both stated the season 1-0. Russell allowed one run on six hits
and struck out seven in game one while Cutler surrendered three runs - one earned - on five hits and fanned five in the nightcap.
Steve Drury and Dylan Poulin connected on back-to-back two-out doubles to deliver the first Leominster run of the evening in the top
of the first. Nick Bergeron led off the second with a single down the right field line and later crossed home plate following a Raider
infield miscue. Sean Mullaney then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field as Post 151 took the 3-0 lead.
East Side broke through in the home half of the second as Brutto drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a Cam Frederick two-out
single down the right field line before touching home on a balk.
Following a 4-6-3 double play in the third, Post 201 set down the next eight batters in order - including four strikeouts in-a-row by
Zona. Offensively, With a pair of outs in the fifth, the Raiders loaded the bases courtesy of a single and a pair of walks but an infield
grounder ended the threat.
Leominster then tacked on the final run of the opening contest as Joey LaPointe swiped home as part of a double steal in the sixth.
Post 201 took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap as Smith connected on an RBI double to left field. In the next frame,
O'Connor sent an RBI single to short and Nate Frederick scored following an infield miscue for the 3-0 advantage.
Jeremy Nash scored on a wild pitch to begin a three-run bottom of the third for Post 151. Ryan Lever followed as Mullaney gave himself
up as part of a double steal. Bergeron then used his round-tripper to even the game at 3-3.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth as Brett Corliss put Leominster on top 5-3 with a two-run single to right field.
Despite being tagged with the loss in game two, Peter Bovenzi led the Raider pitching staff with six strikeouts.
East Side ventures to Worcester State on Monday for a 5:30 intra-city showdown with Main South while Leominster hosts Shewsbury at
