East Side Post 201 Advances to the National Bound State Tournament
Worcester, MA --- East Side Post 201, led by a three-run blast by Nate Frederick and a 3-for-4 night by Peter Bovenzi, advanced to
the American Legion Baseball National Bound State Tournament courtesy of a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Leominster Post 151 on
Saturday night in the Zone 4 title game played at Tivnan Field at Lake Park.
The Raiders (14-4), who extended their winning streak to five games, will face the winner of Sundays 4pm Zone 6 Championship game
between Walpole and Hyde Park on Thursday, July 11 at Holy Cross' Fitton Field. First pitch is slated for 9:30am.
Post 201 erased a 3-2 deficit and took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Joe Consolmagno slugged a one-out triple and
scored following a miscue on a ball put into play by Tim Brutto to even the contest at 3-3. After a pitching change, Frederick cranked a
3-1 offering over the fence in left center for his third home run of the season, and second in as many games, to give the Raiders a 6-3 lead.
Leominster answered back in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Brett Corliss drove in Brandon Cole with a single through the
left side and Nick Bergeron followed with an RBI infield hit to plate Ryan Lever.
East Side went on to retire the side in order in the top of the ninth to seal the victory.
Post 151 opened the scoring courtesy of a Dylan Poulin sacrifice fly in the top of the second. Bovenzi responded for the Raiders in the
bottom of the inning with an RBI knock through the left side.
Leominster regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Lever. Sean Mullaney then helped Post 151's cause with a
run-producing infield single. East Side had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth with zero outs; however, a 1-2-3 double play and a
fly out kept the Raiders off the board.
Post 201 later pulled within a run as Zach Zona scampered home following a bases loaded wild pitch in the sixth. Earlier in the frame,
Brutto looked to score from second on Zona's base hit to center field but was gunned down by an accurate throw by Corliss.
Brutto batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Cam Frederick had a 2-for-4 evening at the dish.
Zona (4-1) allowed three runs - two earned - on two hits with eight strikeouts and four walks in seven innings of work. Consolmagno
yielded a pair of runs on five hits with two Ks in two thirds of an inning. Brutto struck out one in a scoreless one and a third to claim his
first save of the season.
Matt Russell shouldered the loss as he surrendered five runs - four earned - on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks in six and a
third. Tim Sargent gave up a run on two hits in two thirds of an inning while Kyle Cutler fanned one and walked two in the eighth.
East Side is back in action on Sunday when Post 201 entertains Northbridge at 5pm. Leominster (13-4) returns to regular season action
on Monday with a 5:30 home game against Main South.
